About Me
I am a second-year seminary student, not a professionally trained theologian. As such, almost anything I write is bound to be extremely tentative and possibly even misinformed. This blog is just a random collection of thoughts, the sort I might discuss with my wife over dinner. I am relatively new to the world of theology, so if you disagree with anything I say or have other thoughts to add, please share them in the comments.
As of right now, I have a keen interest in the writings of Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Thomas Torrance, two theologians who are significantly influencing how I understand Christianity. I should also mention C. S. Lewis, whom I loved long before I discovered it was cliche. At the very least, he deserves credit for introducing me to the world of thoughtful Christianity, that faith and intellect are not mutually exclusive.
There are countless blogs written by people far more educated and insightful than myself. So thanks for visiting and joining me on my journey.
very interesting blogging project.
I am a 69 year old retired Spec. Ed. teacher and have developed a deep interest in the work of Douglas John Hall.Oddly enough, no one I know wants to talk about what I am learning and enjoying so much. It is certainly a new discipline for me!! I sure have learned a lot of new vocabulary! I am especially intrested in Luther’s Theo of the cross as opposed to the theo of glory. I love Dr. Hall’s writing on this. He has also written the best book on human suffering that I have ever read. Found this blog looking for Alan Lewis book “theo of Holy Sat” and want to read that.
Carol, ’tis good to read this
C.S. Lewis – cliche? nah.
I will shamelessly quote him regardless.
Haha, me too! Actually, I think he’s been unfairly lumped in with other “Christian Living” writers, and not taken very seriously in the scholarly world. Probably because he was such a good writer, his ideas sound too simple. His ability to condense complex ideas into simple language is one I know I’ll never match.
I liked your blog. You have some very interesting thoughts and it shows the depth of your knowledge and interests. Keep pursuing your studies and you may become another Bonhoeffer!
I like your humble attitude. What “I write,” you say, “is bound to be extremely tentative…” Tentative. I like that.
From what I’ve read of your writings I would never have guessed you were a first year seminarian. Don’t be hesitant to continue expressing yourself. The word of God is unfettered, free and transcendent of our limitations. “Untie him and let him loose!” (John 11:44)
Pastor Bonhoeffer–and pastor is what this most-quoted theologian of the 20th century wanted to be known as–after writing a new catechism for his young confirmands and after having them memorize that and several Scripture verses would look them into their eyes and ask, “Do you love Jesus?” Some things are tentative, partial, speculative, and not as important as other things. “If I have all knowledge…” You know the rest.
Blessings on you as you answer God’s call. Dwight
